The Presidio of San Francisco is a former Spanish military base established at the Golden Gate in 1776, today one of the largest parks in San Francisco. It functioned as a major U.S. military installation until decommissioning in the early 1990s and is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, home to numerous museums and institutions.
The Presidio adjoins the Presidio Heights district where cab driver Paul Lee Stine was killed in October 1969, giving the area its name within the geography of the Zodiac case. The lead notes the Presidio was historically named for Francis of Assisi, as was the nearby Mission San Francisco de Asís.
