The San Francisco Police Department investigated the Paul Lee Stine murder and the broader Zodiac Killer case. According to a 2009 report it had reviewed an estimated 2,500 suspects, of whom only about a half-dozen were considered credible. The SFPD marked the case inactive in April 2004 citing caseload, then reactivated it by 2007. Its crime lab developed a partial DNA profile from the Zodiac’s letters in 2002.
